Chattanooga Meal Packing Event Brings Family and Friends Together to Fight Hunger

Debbie’s hometown is Chattanooga, TN so when we knew we would be traveling to TN for a wedding, we wanted to have a meal packing event so that our family and friends could see what Meals of Hope is all about. It was a little daunting to arrange an event long distance, but with the assistance of family and friends, we were able to pull it off. We have to recognize a few special people:

Our corporate sponsors Mark (left) and Tami (right) Kuebler of KTM Builders. Beside Mark is his mother Ruth Ann Kuebler, and beside Tami is Mark‘s father and KTM board member Don Kuebler.

Mark and Tami Kuebler of KTM Builders – Let’s face it – it takes money to feed people. We are so grateful to Mark and Tami for being corporate sponsors of the event. Not only did they provide the fiscal support, but they showed up and helped pack meals.

Ricky and Melissa Dover – (Debbie’s brother and sister-in-love) From soliciting donations and volunteers to helping with set up, packing, clean up, and so much more, truly we couldn’t have done this without their help.

Randy Dover (Debbie’s brother), Jonathan Edwards (Debbie’s nephew), and Mickey Dorsey – AKA the muscle men! Randy and Mickey showed up early to help set up, did lots of heavy lifting during the event, and stayed until all the clean up was done.  Jonathan helped  with set up by bringing coffee and hauling supplies.

Of the 45 volunteers at the event, almost half of them were family (pictured below). Words fall short of describing how blessed we are to share Meals of Hope with them.

The Dover family showed up to volunteer!

We are grateful to Christ United Methodist Church for allowing us to use their facility and promoting the event to the congregation. Many of the volunteers were from the church. We were greatly assisted by several church staff members, including Mike Feely, Becky Hall, and Theresa Jones. It was great to see so many people come together with a heart to serve others, and making time during a very busy season to help feed those in need.

A total of 21,440 meals were donated to the Chattanooga Food Bank!

Today we’d like to introduce you to Debbie Sullivan.

Debbie, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?

I have been a Physician Assistant (PA) for more than 35 years. In 2024, I attended the national PA conference and was given the opportunity to register for a volunteer event. Volunteerism is a core part of who I am personally and professionally, so I signed up. On the day of the event, I was introduced to Meals of Hope as I participated in a fun, high-energy, rewarding meal packing event. Since I had never heard of Meals of Hope, I went online and checked out the organization. I discovered they are a national non-profit organization whose mission is to bring together people and communities to fight against hunger and food insecurity.

As a PA, I have seen first hand the health problems associated with hunger, food insecurity, and malnutrition. It is such an epic wide-scale problem not only in the US, but throughout the world. It always felt like too big of a problem to make much of a difference or to have an impact until I discovered Meals of Hope. My husband Greg and I decided to join Meals of Hope, and in October 2024, we became the Packing Partners in the state of Arizona. We are just getting started, but we have already hosted events in our local communities that have packed over 100,000 meals. Those meals have been donated to local food banks, and are feeding our neighbors! We love having that kind of an impact right here at home.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?

It’s not always a smooth road, because hunger and food insecurity is such a huge problem with so many facets. We rely on organizations and individuals to sponsor events. We ask our sponsors to do 3 things: 1) to provide the venue for the event, 2) to provide the volunteers for the event, and 3) to pay for the ingredients of the meals that will be packed. There is a lot of competition for financial resources these days, and there so many good causes that organizations can support. Even when organizations want to host a meal-packing event, they may not have the ability to do so.

That being said, once an organization commits to hosting an event, the events have always gone well. The volunteers feel good about the contributions they are making, the organizations feel good about bringing their employees (and sometimes employees’ families) together to make an impact in the community, and the events are high-energy and make people happy. That’s always a win! And, when the volunteers understand that the little bit of time, energy, and money expended accomplishes so much in such a short time and will positively impact so many people, they leave the event knowing that they have made a difference in the life of local families and individuals.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?

Meals of Hope is a 501(c)3 charitable organization whose mission is to bring communities together to end hunger. Meals of Hope was founded in 2007, and is headquartered in Naples, FL. Since its inception, more than 119 MILLION meals have been packed. Sponsoring organizations determine where the meals will go, but our desire is that they stay in the local community, rather than being shipped out to other countries. That is one of the things that sets us apart from other similar organizations.

Meals of Hope is a turn-key operation. We bring the event to you. We have had events at universities, schools, churches, military bases, community centers. sports venues, large corporate meetings and more. Sponsors determine which meal is packed, who will receive those meals, and the date of the packing event, and Meals of Hope does the rest. These events are great for teambuilding and fulfilling corporate social responsibility.

I am proud of the relationships we have built with many of the food banks in the Phoenix area and surrounding communities. They are the front line of defense in the fight against hunger. They have great resources, but because the needs are so great, they also need help keeping their shelves stocked. We have a great partnership that is mutually beneficial for the food banks and Meals of Hope.

I want readers to know that although the problem of hunger and food insecurity is a very large scale global problem, there are things that you can do to make a difference. Host an event, help raise funds, spread the word about Meals of Hope, and commit to volunteering at events that have a direct impact on your community. Involve the whole family – especially the kids – so that they too can experience how good it feels to be part of the solution.

How do you think about happiness?

Meal packing events make me happy!! Why? Because 1 in 7 Arizona households face hunger and 1 in 5 children face food insecurity. So many families are just one missed paycheck away from being hungry and food insecure. As one person, I don’t have the resources to make much of an impact for those families. However, partnering with Meals of Hope gives me opportunities to work with organizations and individuals throughout Arizona, and collectively, we can make a difference!

Pricing: The cost of sponsoring a meal packing event depends on the number of meals packed.
