Dixon High School teamed up with the ‘Meals of Hope’ program on Saturday in Onslow County to provide relief for Western North Carolina.
More than 100 students came together to pack 100 thousand meals for those impacted by Hurricane Helene.
The President of Meals of Hope Stephen Popper says this event wouldn’t have been possible without their help. “Some kids are pouring oatmeal, and other sugar, some are weighing, some are sealing, but they’re all having a great time, and what’s so important is that they’ve come together on an early Saturday morning to really try to help the people who are really hurting in the farm part of the state,” Popper said.
Sadie Lanier, the President of the Dixon High School Key Club, worked to join forces with Meals of Hope and spread the word in her community to gather volunteers. “It means a lot. I love to help people, volunteer. I really love events like this because food is important, and it’s exciting to bring it to the communities that need it,” Lanier said.
Meals of Hope is a national nonprofit group that works to provide food for those in need.
Gracelyn Foy, a high school volunteer, says she is proud to work alongside a generous organization. “It’s very high energy. It’s very energetic. People are running around, getting things done. There’s oatmeal everywhere, but it’s just very fun,” Foy said about the event Saturday.
These meals were scheduled to be delivered right after the event.
Meals of Hope aims to pack one million meals in North Carolina in 2025 to help food insecure people throughout the state.
